
A type of wool sweater that is buttoned down the front, named after J.T. Brudenell, the British count of Cardigan (1797-1868). During the Siege of Sebastopol, Brudenell ordered his undermanned cavalry to confront the Russian infantry. The siege ended in massacre for the British forces (October 25, 1854) and became known to history as the “Charge of the Light Brigade.”
